In the paths of life, some of the personalities that we meet are unique to the stage that they leave a experiences and lessons in their entirety are achievements acquired despite reality imposed by health, material and physical conditions. Widad Mohammad Khair., who suffered from a mobility disability that struck her since childhood, almost at the time limited her ability to work. She did not give up . In detremination she decided to challenge the limitations imposed to her life to convert the disability to an incentive to strive hard and finally to graduate from the Faculty of Arts, Omdurman Islamic University, Department of Documentation and Libraries. She works as secretary of the library of the General Union of Sudanese Women since 2004.
The dream of “Widad” was to contribute in changing the reality of the handicapped in Sudan; in a country that includes a large number of the handicapped. So she joined the path of social responsibility. The establishment of “Shomoos” was the result of the strenuous efforts made by its Founder, Widad , to be an incubator to strengthen the capabilities of the handicapped, and to form a platform for them towards starting in Entrepreneurial world by providing a stimulating environment for creativity and innovation.
“Shomoos” worked to train and rehabilitate a large number of the handicapped, by developing and utilizing their capabilities and energies properly, which enabled them to support themselves without relying on others, until they were able to take charge of their affairs, as Widad says . As a result the organization’s corridors witnessed great developmental mobility for this segment through conducting training courses and workshops in the field of detailing, handicrafts and small and medium industries, such as soap manufacturing, milling and leather goods.
To achieve its goal of supporting the local product of these industries and contributing to support social and economic development, “Shomoos” worked on marketing these products by holding periodic exhibitions to display the creations of women with disabilities, to be the nucleus of the local products market, something that motivated a number of girls with mobility disabilities to start their projects. They challenge all obstacles, especially financing, which made the organization one of the important entities for spreading the culture of self-employment in Sudan.
“Shomoos” also aims to educate the society healthily, and take care of the mother from the first stages of pregnancy until delivery, to avoid the health factors that can affect her and her baby, which can cause birth defects of the fetus and stop practices harmful to the mother’s health. The organization ahso work in support of every movement Supportive of activating the laws for women with disabilities by communicating with the relevant authorities, to ensure that the sector obtain all its legitimate rights and protect its individuals from neglect and loss.
