As part of its relentless striving to transform its cities into sustainable smart cities, Saudi Arabia has implemented a qualitative renewable energy project in cooperation between Wadi Makkah Technology Company, owned by Umm Al-Gura University, and the emerging Pavegin company specialized in converting paving roads and alleys from mere ordinary panels to panels that transfer the movement energy over them to electrical energy.
The Saudi News Agency quoted Eng. Khaled Suleimani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wadi Mekkah Investment Company, that the project includes the application of panels technology in specific areas in the Holy Capital to contribute to providing clean energy, in addition to collecting the data necessary to benefit from them in facilitating the process of managing the pilgrims and visitors crowds other operations.
Each year, the Holy Capital receives hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and visitors , and the Kingdom is working on implementing smart projects to serve them in the Holy Places, such as a project to reduce the temperature of the holy places, creating electric escalators to facilitate the movements of the worshipers in the holly sanctuary and launching smart 13-storey parking building that can accommodate 550 cars. In the context of the official approach to control the heavy traffic jamming accompanying the performance of the of pilgrimage carrying-out, in addition to adopting the smart Hajj card instead of the passports of the pilgrims that- the card- includes Hajj personal information, medical and residential.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs in Saudi Arabia is working to implement an ambitious initiative to implement the concepts of smart cities and convert five major cities into smart cities by the end of this year, and work to convert most of the major Saudi cities into smart cities by 2030.
